Lonely Planet review

Buried in a thicket of towering rainforest, this utopian retreat is littered with happily lost folk who have come for a night and stayed for a week. The serenity is infectious and a broad range of room types accommodate backpackers, families, couples and everyone in between.Pick of the budget digs are the five-bed timber dorms, with shared bathrooms, kitchen facilities and a sheltered, outdoor bench table for ambient socialising. Couples and twins can seek privacy in the three-to-a-block 'Rudder' and 'Undine' rooms, housed in small brick bungalows. But the plushest beds are saved for the stylish 'Ribbon' and 'St Crispin' cabins with balconies, simple but exquisite decor, soft amber lighting, and polished en suites. One of the Beach House's best virtues is its size; the accommodation is scattered widely and the surrounding rainforest remains the dominant feature. At the bottom of the property's winding path is a pool and excellent bistro serving inventive and inexpensive food. Just beyond lies a private, still and empty beach. Butterflies and birdlife outnumber the bipeds, and cassowaries reign supreme in the surrounding forest.
