Address: 321 charoenrat road , Chiang mai 50000, Thailand Show on map
This long-running guesthouse, now American-owned, places a few tidy bungalows plus rooms in a quaint two-storey wooden Thai-style house, in a garden setting by the Mae Nam Ping. Pun Pun belongs to the first generation of backpacker guesthouses in Chiang Mai, and is one of the few that has kept up its standards and is thus still worth recommending. The long, narrow property has a varied set of rooms in an old wooden house plus a few bungalows, all at dirt-cheap rates. There is a nice garden area where you can take meals, and the city's public promenade along the river passes right in front of the guesthouse. Assets include a fully stocked bar, snooker table, darts and a small library of used paperbacks. The friendly owner is happy to help with local information, onward Thailand itineraries and so on.

Down river you'll find plenty of atmospheric riverside restaurants, bars and cafes, including the long-time town favourite for good food and live music nightly, Riverside Pub & Restaurant.
The name Pun Pun (or pan pan) means 'roll roll' in Thai, a throwback to the days when one of the main activities in guesthouses along the river was rolling doobies at sunset (no longer condoned at this guesthouse or any other!).
