Almost a kingdom unto itself, the Dhara Dhevi has cordoned off 52 acres east of Chiang Mai to erect historically inspired monuments and recreated village spaces to become one of two 'destination' resorts popular with wedding parties and honeymooning couples.

A horse-drawn carriage delivers you into the walled kingdom of Dhara Dhevi, a hotel resort that meticulously replicates the region's architectural highlights. Spanning several centuries of architectural heritage, the hotel comprises two time-specific sections. The Lanna village envelopes a terraced rice paddy farmed by blue-shirted farmers and resident water buffalo. (The harvested rice is donated to the local temple.) The surrounding two-storey guest villas are aristocratically decorated in teak and northern Thai antiques. Narrow lanes meander through the 'village' to the hotel restaurants and award-winning spa. Crossing a large bridge leads to the colonial section where capacious suites sport chandeliers, tiled bathrooms and Chinese-style accents reminiscent of 1920s Shanghai. The grounds are so vast that bicycles (or electric golf carts) are loaned to guests.
