A 'destination' resort, Four Seasons is its own idyllic village with working rice paddies and plush guest villas. If you get bored, you could always visit Chiang Mai, or not.Opened in 1995, the Four Seasons Chiang Mai was the area's first five-star property and introduced a level of luxury previously unimagined in this mountainous backwater. The 64 pavilion suites are opulently decorated in rich-toned Thai silk and cotton textiles. Climbing up to the top tier are the 16 residence suites, which feature huge living/dining areas with views of the resort's functioning rice fields (ploughed by water buffalo) and the surrounding mountains of the Mae Sa Valley. The resort's spa was designed by architect Lek Bunnag, a pioneer in the neo-Lanna movement, and incorporates motifs borrowed from Lanna temples. Although the self-contained high-end village concept has been replicated by the Dhara Dhevi, many agree that the Four Seasons is more intimate of the two. Despite its fairytale reputation, former guests complain that the staff overwork the upsell.
