Built in 1892, the Palmer House is the longest continually operating hotel in the USA, and they know how to serve guests with flair. The lobby features enough opulence that a trip here is imperative wherever you end up staying.

The home of many worldwide firsts (first to use electric lighting, first to have in-room telephones, inventor of the brownie), the Palmer House boasts a surprisingly friendly and welcoming vibe for a place so resplendent in Tiffany statues and acres of glittering gold. The 1639 rooms vary greatly in size, so ask for a big one when you check in. The "towers" rooms cost about 50.00 extra and get you a unit on the 22nd or 23rd floor, bigger TV, DVD player and continental breakfast in a private lounge. The pool (free) and fitness club (10.00 per day) are both above average, and the management works to make the hotel especially appealing to gay and lesbian travelers. Wired internet is available for a fee. The hotel does a booming convention business, so don't be surprised if lines are long and rooms are unavailable on that random, seemingly off-peak Wednesday in October.
