The 807-room InterContinental has a split personality. The older portion, on the south side, was built in 1929 as a health club for rich men and retains its luxurious jazz-era hangout vibe throughout the four-storey lobby, sweeping staircase and martini-slinging salon. The newer, northern wing swaps elegance for cheeriness. The older rooms have an elegant, heavily draped atmosphere, overlaid with all the facilities business travelers expect. Just north is a newer addition that used to house the InterCon's budget chain. The rooms on this side feel fresh and fun; whimsical touches like funky lamps and polka dots abound. At 50.00 less than the south wing, it's good value in a top-end hotel. All of the lush public spaces are in the older portion. Swimmers (and landlubbers) should note that the indoor pool ranks as one of the world's most stunning. The blue-and-white tiled walls, potted plants, stained glass windows, chandeliers and Greek Revival columns will leave your jaw on the ground. At junior Olympic size, the pool is also the largest inside any Chicago hotel. Wired internet is available hotel-wide for a fee.

Many locals swear the house saloon serves the best martini in town. If you're still standing after imbibing, peek down Michigan Ave at the Gothic Tribune Tower, which was built about the same time as the InterCon. Look for chunks of the Taj Mahal, Parthenon and other famous edifices embedded in the lower walls.
Members of the Shrine Organization built the original structure, and their mysterious symbols pervade the architecture. Stop by the concierge desk and ask for the free tape-recorded tour that will guide you through these and other aspects of the building's interior.
