The W occupies zillion-dollar lakefront property on an inner access road away from other high-rises, meaning the rooms are sunny and impart unfettered views of either the lake or the city (expect to pay 50.00-75.00 more for the former).

The vibe here is all about fashion and fun. The location deposits you at the doorstep of Navy Pier and Ohio St Beach, and it's about a 15-minute walk west to Michigan Ave. The 520 rooms are furnished in a clubby, minimalist style, and are notable for their cushy beds with pillow-top mattresses, and bathrooms you can see into from the main room (great for couples, not so great for others). Amenities in the standard-sized rooms include a CD player, designer bath products and wired Internet access (for 15.00 per day). Low rooms on the Lake Shore Dr side tend to suffer from traffic noise, so try to book on the 33-storey building's higher floors. There's another W in town - the W Chicago City Center at 172 W Adams St - but the views and location make this the pick of the two.
