Comfortably shabby, the Chicago International is what most people expect from a US hostel - rambling house, mix-n-match furniture. The way-north location near Loyola University is an issue though: while it's safe enough, you're far from the action.

With walls painted in lush hues of blueberry, plum, cranberry and gold, plus velvet drapes, high-back couches and candlelit tables in the common areas, the Chicago International Hostel resembles a smooth groovester lounge. The funky colors extend to the sleeping areas, which are otherwise basic. Dorms usually contain four to eight non-bunked beds, with shared bathrooms down the hall. Private rooms range from lackluster to swish. The 'VIP Room' has a four-poster bed, monstrous size bathroom and cable TV. The big, bright kitchen will delight any chefs in your group. A couple of sticking points: the dearth of lockers for safekeeping of belongings, and sucky internet access (both the free wi-fi and the one internet terminal only work occasionally). Lockout is from 11:00-14:00. Note that the Red Line train takes at least 35 minutes to get to the Loop from here.
