From the starlit lobby to the fantastically comfortable rooms, this hotel is oozing style. Staff will proudly tell you that it was the world's first 'design hotel' and they're probably right; once upon a time, style guru Arne Jacobsen designed everything from the light fixtures to the beds.

From the outside this looks like any other office block and nobody would blame you for wondering where the fashion gods had disappeared to when the hallways and lifts were adorned. But wait until you reach your room, furnished in comforting sea greens and blues, with opulent touches like orchids blooming on the nightstand. Close the curtains for a cosy at-home feel or open them up for a panoramic view of the city below, including Tivoli's skyward-bound roller coaster and (on a clear day) Sweden across the water. If you're not lucky enough to have one of the top floor rooms, you can enjoy the same view from the twentieth-floor restaurant. For those after the 'original' experience, room 606 has been left exactly as Arne designed it in the '60s - right down to the clunking air-conditioning.
