This place is the essence of old-world charm. The lobby has the style of an age-old gentlemen's club with dark wood everywhere, grandfather clocks ticking in the sidelines and Art Deco lights overhead. The atmosphere reflects the hotel's reputation as solid, reliable and exquisitely refined.Originally built for Denmark's King Frederik VIII and in operation since 1913, the hotel continues to host royalty of a sort; artists as diverse as Diana Ross, Gene Wilder and Marlene Dietrich have stayed here and it remains a firm favourite with today's stars. A fairly recent renovation has smoothed over the old nicks and frays but has done nothing to erase the antique feel of the place. The old-fashioned charm continues to the rooms; each is slightly different in layout and decor but all have big, comfy beds and fantastic bathrooms. Colourful Hans Christian Anderson pictures will greet you on each landing as you head down in the glass lift to the candlelit library bar that's chock-a-block with books and antique paintings. Staff are helpful and welcoming and, despite being a little too near to Central Station, still manages sto be a hushed oasis right in the heart of the city.

Cross the street to Tivoli, Copenhagen's famous amusement park that first opened its gates in 1843. Enjoy old favourites like the ferris wheel or pantomime theatre or put your life in the hands of the new Demon roller coaster. Flower gardens light up the day, fairy lights twinkle at night and there are enough food stalls, shops, theatrical stages and rides to while away the best part of a day.
