This lesser-known inn rests atop Inca walls, not far from the Plaza San Blas. Superior service and some unusual touches inside pleasant rooms set the property apart from more run-of-the-mill colonial guesthouses that plague the town.

Owned by a package-tour company, the Orquidea Real offers a convenient location and rates that make it a deal. The staff is extremely well-organised, whether arranging for someone to meet your flight or making the daily breakfast included in the rates. Though most guests are typical tourists who value nothing more than a security guard on duty at night outside the door, the price is right even for independent travellers. Many of the rustic rooms have working fireplaces, exposed wooden beams and windows with views over the city. All have private bathrooms, cable TV, phones and safes, while matrimonial doubles also have king-sized beds. The inn's only suite, which has panoramic windows and a small sitting area, costs little more than a room.
