Shake-up time: the Raffles group have brought professional service and management to Beijing's most historic European style hotel building right at the very heart of town. But it's not cheap.

Stand outside the balconied Raffles and weigh up its neighbours. To the east is the uninspiring Beijing Hotel, built in the 1970s on the rubble of an older hotel. The stone portico of the hotel section immediately to the west is decorated with gawky Soviet motifs from the 1950s. But the stylish 7-storey Raffles is part of the original Grand Hotel de Pekin, which dates to the early 1900s. Seeking to maximise its European dimensions and illuminated in a chandelier glow, the attractive lobby yields to an elegant staircase. Standard doubles are immaculate, spacious and well-proportioned, decked out with period-style furniture; bathrooms are big. Immerse yourself in total peace and quiet at The Writers Bar, after a meal at elegant French restaurant Jaan opposite.
