This is Maui's ultimate escape. Exclusive Hotel Hana-Maui leaves the electronic gadgets at the front desk. Forget TV, you won't even find an alarm clock in the guest rooms. This pampering resort in remote Hana is all about unwinding. If old-fashioned Hawaiian hospitality and subdued elegance appeal, this is as good as it gets. The hotel resembles an overgrown plantation estate. Everything is airy and open, and rich with Hawaiian accents, from island art in the lobby to handstitched quilts on the beds. Rooms have a classic appeal with bleached hardwood floors, ceiling fans and French doors opening to trellised patios. Still, Hotel Hana-Maui is not everyone's cup of tea. Some guests are disappointed by the simplicity. Those who prefer air-con over trade-wind breezes, or can't live without sports on the tube, may feel like they're paying a lot and getting little. Most people, however, embrace the tranquility and love it here. Activities are low-key and include yoga classes, a full-service spa, and horseback riding on the hotel's ranchland. There's no beach near Hotel Hana-Maui, but a shuttle takes guests to unspoiled Hamoa Beach, 3.2km (2mi) south of the hotel.

Walk up Lyon's Hill for a sweeping view of Hana. The path begins at the back of the hotel parking lot and takes about 30 minutes return. While it's a fine walk any time of the day, it's a top-notch spot to watch the sun set on Maui's most Hawaiian town.
Hotel Hana-Maui dates to the 1940s when San Francisco businessman Paul Fagan bought the 56 sq km (14,000 acre) Hana Ranch and then built a small hotel to woo wealthy friends into visiting. He also brought his minor-league baseball team, the San Francisco Seals, to Hana for spring training.
