Address: 54 quai de bacalan , Bordeaux 33300, France
Bordeaux may have been recently Unesco-listed, but this retro-futuristic hotel - built new from the ground up and opened in late 2007 - well and truly breaks the neoclassical mould. From its monochrome lobby to its 45 rooms incorporating vinyl, leather and lots of curves (including circular beds in some cases), Bordeaux's first-ever design hotel is like nothing the city's seen before. Open bathrooms (screened by white ribbon-curtains made of shredded plastic) incorporate free-standing basins and two-person bath tubs in some rooms (toilets are separated with walls). The landmark angular, arctic-white building was conceived by owners Alain Dhersing and Chantal Deknyff, whose aim was to show not just Bordeaux of the past but also the present and future. Their vision was brought to fruition by King Kong architects, and all of the decor is made by local designers. Three rooms at Seeko'o are equipped for wheelchairs. If you're splurging, the Panoramic Suite is just that, with wraparound river views, steps that lead to a reading alcove above the bed, and a timber-decked balcony. Wi-fi's free.

Head up to the top floor to unwind in the free Turkish hammam. The black and red champagne bar on the first floor, with oversize leather seats trimmed with piping, is open from 18.00 to 02.00 from Tuesday to Saturday for guests and nonguests, and does some very cool things with cocktails.
If you think the building looks like something that struck the Titanic, you're right: 'seeko'o' means 'iceberg' in the Inuit language.
