Pay less for city views, more for eye-popping harbour views in this slick complex of spacious suites and self-contained apartments. The vibe is fairly corporate, but the mood is relieved by cheerful splashes of colour, plush carpets and friendly staff.

The refined, eight-storey Saville Park raises Darwin's accommodation bar to lofty heights with its contemporary interior design, refurbished on a strict 18-month cycle to keep things looking spiffy. The suites are popular with business and government travellers, while the self-contained apartments are good value for families or groups of friends looking for a little indulgence after months of backpacker dorm-life. There's a 24-hour supermarket next door to help you balance the costs! The pool is great for a dip, and little touches like automated Indian punkawalla ceiling fans, interesting Asian art and boutique soaps and shampoos make for an opulent experience. Wheelchair access is good, and the location is hard to beat. Note that the 10-storey tower rapidly emerging from the earth next door might limit the views from some suites.
