Darwin's only true five-star hotel, the salubrious Crowne Plaza is one block back from the Esplanade, but still commands fine sea views. Beyond the curvilinear concrete exterior, the full gamut of hi-tech gadgetry awaits the business traveller. Good-value weekend deals are often available.Darwin's 12-storey Crowne Plaza is a truly five-star operation. Staff are discreet and efficient but never snooty, realising that in Darwin the millionaire might be the unshaven guy in the shorts and Hawaiian shirt holding up the bar. Outside things look a little office blocky, but slick interiors save the day. Spacious suites sustain subtle coffee-and-cream linen and wall colours, marble-clad bathrooms (all with baths), brand new king-sized beds and 24-hour room service. Oddly enough there are no balconies, but the views south over Stokes Hill Wharf and Darwin Harbour are stellar. There are excellent onsite eateries and bars, a BBQ area and a funky ovoid swimming pool with plenty of shade cloth to keep the sun off your back.

Walk south down Mitchell St to Darwin's amazing Parliament House. Designed to combat tropical heat, its facade keeps 80% of direct sunlight out of the interior. Check out the stylised stainless steel and bronze Northern Territory coat of arms above the entry by local artist Geoff Todd.
