One of the oldest hotels in Dubai, the Riviera has a great creekside location, around the corner from the Deira souqs. Though its rooms have seen better days, they're clean, comfortable and come with some unexpected extras. Definitely pay the small upgrade for a creek-facing room.Built in 1963, the Riviera was once the tallest building in Dubai. Nowadays it blends in with the other anonymous mid-rise towers, but still commands a fantastic location. The Indian-fancy chintz decor is dated and tired, but rooms are clean and well kept, especially the bathrooms, which were entirely remodelled in 2006. We were also pleasantly surprised to find down pillows on the beds - a rarity in this price range. Aesthetes may bemoan the recessed fluorescent lighting, but splurge on a creek view room and you'll hardly notice. Alas, there's no pool and no alcohol.

After checking out the Gold and Spice souqs, catch an abra across the Creek to explore the Bur Dubai sights, particularly the heritage-rich Bastakia Quarter, where you can stop for an alfresco lunch beneath the trees at the Basta Art Cafe (tel: 353 5071; Al-Fahidi St).
