A favourite with Russian tour groups, this stately old hotel has a great outlook right on the Creek. The rooms are simply decorated, but comfortable - especially for this price range. Shell out the extra cash for a water view.

The first thing you notice about the Carlton Tower is its location - the Creek lies right across the road. In a city with so little aesthetic appeal, it's worth paying the extra 100.00 for a water view. Rooms are simply decorated with blonde-wood and glass-topped furniture; bathrooms have enough space to unpack, but the tile needs replacing. TVs are small, there are no robes in the closet, and the pillows are made of foam, but rates are terrific, the souqs walkable, and the pool refreshing. The nightclubs are cheesy, but there's a great bellydancer in the restaurant.
