A favourite with Russian tour groups, this stately old hotel has a great outlook right on the Creek. The rooms are simply decorated, but comfortable - especially for this price range. Shell out the extra cash for a water view. The first thing you notice about the Carlton Tower is its location - the Creek lies right across the road. In a city with so little aesthetic appeal, it's worth paying the extra 100.00 for a water view. Rooms are simply decorated with blonde-wood and glass-topped furniture; bathrooms have enough space to unpack, but the tile needs replacing. TVs are small, there are no robes in the closet, and the pillows are made of foam, but rates are terrific, the souqs walkable, and the pool refreshing. The nightclubs are cheesy, but there's a great bellydancer in the restaurant.

While sunset on the Creek is lovely from the rooms, the souqs are a more exciting place to linger as the sky turns purple. Follow your nose to the Spice Souq and then the glittering Gold Souq. For dinner grab a street shawarma or head down to the Radisson SAS (tel: 222 7171; Baniyas St), where you'll find Shabestan for Persian with a view, and Sumibiya for do-it-yourself Japanese-Korean BBQ.
