Lonely Planet review

The Dubai outpost of the Indian hotel group Taj Palace is far more conservative than comparable five-star hotels. Though rooms are huge and have all the business-class amenities, there's no alcohol served here. Still, we like the onsite Ayurvedic spa and big rooftop pool, which gets sun all day long. The glass-walled, two-storey-high lobby feels like an airport terminal, but rooms are far more inviting. Surprisingly smart in their decor, each has a balcony and is a whopping 60sq metres. The colour scheme is typical Dubai - 50 shades of beige - and furnishings include separate sitting areas and good beds with fluffy down pillows. The wood laminate floors are peeling in spots, but little extras like red silky robes divert your attention. Baths are done in black granite and yellow marble, with big soaking tubs and separate showers. While we like the rooms, spa, and full-sun rooftop pool, we have qualms with management's decision to allow smoking in every room yet ban alcohol. If you don't like the lingering smell of stale smoke, stay elsewhere. And if you bring your own booze, be discrete.
