A boxy 125-room four-star oriented towards business travellers, this Sheraton is also well located for sightseeing. While the rooms won't have you groping for your camera, a walk around the interesting neighbourhood might.Though this is one of Dubai's uninspired box-shaped hotels, it's thankfully small and offers decent service. The rooms themselves are standard old-school Sheraton and don't skimp on amenities (hairdryer, stocked minibar and satellite television), but non-smokers should make certain to book a non-smoking room. The bed linens are exceptionally good - crisp white cotton duvet covers with plump feather pillows - a rarity in this price range. The hotel has a gym and a rooftop swimming pool, but we're not so sure about chancing the in-house beauty salon. You can sample Dubai's old expat drinking holes with a pint at the Viceroy bar on the first floor (complete with very agreeable leather couches). Next door is the excellent Indian restaurant Antique Bazaar, where you'll find a bored house band and a spasmodically interested (and interesting) dancer.

This hotel is located in an interesting part of Bur Dubai. A walk through streets filled with Indian and Pakistani workers and shoppers takes you to the Bastakia area with its wonderful heritage windtower buildings from the early 20th century as well as galleries and cafes. Just up the road is BurJuman (tel: 352 0222; cnr Trade Centre Rd), where you will find some of Dubai's most upmarket shopping.
