This startling blue glass edifice shaped like an upside-down tuning fork adds yet another architecturally intriguing shape to the Sheikh Zayed Rd strip. The rooms are exceptionally comfortable with Thai-inspired furnishings. The service is excellent and there's a spectacular view from the rooftop pool on the 36th floor. We've always been puzzled why people go to another country and then check-in at a hotel that's themed on their own culture, or one that has nothing in common with the country they're visiting. But there's something so warm about the traditional Thai greeting, the smell of fresh jasmine and the sound of live Thai music being played in the foyer of this hotel, that these questions can wait for another day. The rooms of the hotel are high-end-business-class stylish with exquisite Thai touches; the top two floors house the executive rooms and suites. The views from the gym are enough to make you don your running shoes for a look, and both the Benjarong Thai and the Pax Romana Italian restaurants are fine Dubai eateries.

After trying the hotel's restaurants (recommended) there's plenty of dining and clubbing options in the area. For local action, head to Cosmo Café (tel: 332 6569; The Tower, Sheikh Zayed Rd) for some sheesha (tobacco smoked through a water pipe) and Saj Express (tel: 321 1191; Sheikh Zayed Rd) for great shawarma.
