A landmark hotel on the Sheikh Zayed strip, the Fairmont manages to be both a snazzy address and a top quality business hotel. Though the dated white-marble lobby looks more like a shopping mall than a hotel, the soothing rooms sport all the latest gadgetry and some damn comfy beds. Don't miss the spa.The Fairmont is a distinctive sight at night when its four-poster towers are illuminated by changing coloured lights, attracting a shiny-shiny clientele in search of the promise of splash and glitz. There's nothing understated about this place, from the chrome and marble lobby to the white leather desk chairs that recall Joan Collins' office in 'Dynasty' (a renovation is slated for 2008). Regardless, it's a landmark hotel, with amenities to match, including float-away beds, Bose wave radios and deep bathtubs. Our favourite detail? In-room safes that let you charge your laptop while it's safely stored. Book a treatment at the first-rate spa, which is known for its seaweed body wraps. Outside, two pools mean you can chase the sun from dawn till dusk. The outlets are exceptional, especially the Exchange Grill and Cin-Cin wine bar.

The Sheikh Zayed strip is all about shopping, eating and drinking. Do all three at Emirates Towers (tel: 330 0000), across the road via the pedestrian tunnel. Fuel up at Noodle House before maxing out your credit cards at the Boulevard shopping centre, then cool out over cocktails at the aptly named Vu's Bar, atop the adjoining hotel.
There's a walkway over Sheikh Zayed Rd to the Convention Centre.
