Gleaming like a jewel box inside and out, the London sits just south of the Sunset Strip, with slick design, a sparkling rooftop pool, and a swish restaurant by Michelin-starred chef Gordon Ramsay.

In the building formerly occupied by the outdated Bel-Age Hotel, the London opened in 2008 with a look that's virtually unrecognizable. Shiny black tiles cover the facade, the marble floor in the lobby gleams like Harry Winston diamonds, and the walls of corridors to guest rooms are sheathed in suede, as if to rest an engagement ring on. Even the basic rooms ('London suites') are spacious (average 750 sq ft/70 sq m) and lavishly appointed with an understated color palette, a balcony or patio, espresso machines, iPod dock, complimentary wi-fi and European-style showers with two shower heads. If you visit the hotel gym, there's complimentary washing of your gym clothes. Take a trip up to the sleek pool deck on the top level, and enjoy 270° views across the city and the Hollywood Hills. Gordon Ramsay's restaurant also does room service.
