Lonely Planet review

This attractively landscaped 210-room family resort is a prime choice for watersports enthusiasts and afternoon cocktailers who appreciate the convenience of a swim-up pool bar. The rooms are large and comfy, despite the dated and ugly tower that houses them, and the restaurants are good. Alas, service is weak (welcome to Dubai). When the spiffy new Westin hotel, Le Meridien's sister property, opened up next door, the ugliness of the tower's vintage 1980s architecture became glaringly obvious. Fear not: though the rooms need a fluff job to bring them up to date (salmon-and-white-tile bathrooms, gold-and-burnt-orange bedspreads), the new signature beds, with fluffy down pillows and crisp linens, more than compensate for any design flaws. The grounds and watersports, not the rooms, stand out here. Plan to linger long in the gigantic freeform pool, skitter along the gulf on waterskis, meander palm-shaded promenades, or build castles on the sandy beach with the kids. There's a great gym, a PADI certified dive centre, sailing craft for hire and plenty of activities for the kiddies. The onsite restaurants are quite good (but skip the overpriced and overwrought food at Tang), though you may find better options at nearby resorts.
