Surrounded by man-made waterways, Al-Qasr is the centrepiece of the extraordinary Madinat Jumeirah resort. The views are fabulous, and the in-room amenities top-notch. Great for a splurge.

Details are extraordinary at Al-Qasr, particularly the lobby's Austrian-crystal chandeliers, which reflect rainbows onto mirror-polished inlaid-marble floors. Rooms are styled with heavy arabesque architectural flourishes, rich colours, and cushy furnishings, including sumptuous beds and his-and-hers bathroom amenities. The side-by-side balconies lack privacy, but overlook the Gulf and the grand display of the Madinat Jumeirah, a gorgeous complex of Arabian-style stone buildings connected by a series of Venetian-style canals and a labyrinthian souq chock-a-block with restaurants and shops. You could spend your entire holiday at the Madinat without ever leaving. At the other end of the complex is Al-Qasr's less-fancy little sister, Mina A' Salam.
