The no-nonsense Novotel, behind the Sheikh Zayed strip, adjoins the convention centre. Rooms are smallish, but there's good desk space and a sofa. Furnishings are dated and amenities limited (no washcloths in the bath, wafer-thin soap, lumpy pillows), but the location is central and service friendly.Conveniently located off the Sheikh Zayed Rd, the Novotel is well positioned for exploring. The lobby is impressive for its spaciousness; we only wish the rooms were likewise big. Still, there's plenty of space to unpack and work. The generic blonde-wood decor needs freshening, but there's no clutter to distract business travellers, who appreciate the free wi-fi access (note: proxies don't break through the UAE's censor system; better to stay in Media City, where sites aren't blocked). We're puzzled by the lack of washcloths in the bath, and annoyed that water splashes out of the half-enclosed shower, but if you're only here for a few nights, it probably won't matter. Either way, we love the Novotel's location and appreciate the straight-forwardness of the lodgings and the no-nonsense service. The rectangular pool is sufficient for laps, and there's an okay gym with circuit-training equipment.

The glittering Sheikh Zayed Strip lies a short walk away. Cross the pedestrian bridge behind the convention centre and hit the fancy hotel bars. Splashy Cin-Cin, at the Fairmont, serves stellar wines and finger-licking mini Kobe burgers. For dinner, our first-choice restaurants are at the Shangri-La (tel: 343 8888) - we especially love intimate Hoi An for French-Vietnamese and moody Marrakech for Moroccan.
