Lonely Planet review

An eye-poppingly kitsch slice of Moscow, this quirky theme hotel goes delightfully overboard in its decor. Though some design details are ersatz (think faux French provincial), we love the relatively low rates. This place is a steal, given its amenities and location. The lobby of the Moscow sports an over-the-top Bolshoi Theatre-styled dome - a nod to the upwardly mobile Russian tourists the hotel caters to. But the grandiose decor stops at the elevators. Though rooms are big, comfortable and colourful (with either red, green, blue or yellow dominating the scheme), the furnishings border on tacky, with mass-produced Louis XV chairs upholstered with coloured vinyl seats. There are other odd contradictions, like beds with crisp triple-sheeting and lumpy foam pillows, but if you're an unfussy traveller, you probably won't notice. Regardless, we're happy to see a bit of colour in a city that embraces greige, and we love the rates. The Russian-by-the-Creek theme carries throughout, with the crowning touch the Red Square nightclub and its mullet-headed Russian rock band.
