Lonely Planet review

Tucked away on a quiet lane just east of Grafton St, Brooks is a small, plush place where the emphasis is on familial, friendly service. Decor is nouveau classic with high-veneer panelled walls, dark wood retro-Georgian furnishings and shelves lined with old books. Bedrooms have air-con, are very comfortable and are fitted out in subtly coloured furnishings.

The 19th-century-club atmosphere is a little contrived, but there's no denying its comfort: the lovely and relaxing lobby (which extends into a bar and lounge) is full of plump, patterned sofas, a raging fireplace and - for that extra-special bit of cheese - a grand piano that is tickled with great aplomb in the evenings. It's bit of class and demure proximity to Grafton St - close but not quite on top of the action - makes this one of the city's most sought-after beds. When you finally do get to your room, you'll find pillows fluffed to perfection on your king- and superking-size bed from a pillow menu. Go figure. It's enough to tear you away from a soak in the bath and the programme on your in-tile TV (available in some rooms).
