Want to fluff up the pillows in the home of a former Lord Mayor of Dublin? This fine Georgian home has been transformed into a smart guesthouse where the rooms stand out for their understated elegance. The traditional Georgian style has been retained, particularly in the ornamental ceilings and sturdy fireplaces of the first and second-floor rooms.

Timothy Charles Harrington wore the gold chain from 1901 to 1903 before dying in the house in 1910. Whatever bad vibes he may have left were eliminated in later years when the house was bought by the Sisters of Mercy, who turned it into a home for working girls - the convent is still out the back. They would have surely disapproved of the two suites being named after Charles Stewart Parnell and the subject of his adultery, Kitty O'Shea, but we absolutely love the split-level mezzanine that divides them into a bedroom and spacious sitting room. The other rooms are not as spectacular but lack nothing in comfort, while the small lounge downstairs is the perfect spot to nurse that glass of whiskey - preferably in front of a raging peat fire.
