We're a little torn over whether or not to recommend Amrutha Castle. It's enormously overpriced, but has a 5th-floor pool framed by turrets. Rooms are not well maintained but have character. Even the Presidential Suite has a cheap bedspread, but the hotel looks like a castle, for god's sake! The Amrutha was, of all things, designed to resemble Bavaria's Neushwanstien Castle. With its parapets and towers and turrets, it succeeds - relative to Hyderabad. Rooms are small for the price but have interesting layouts, arched doorways and thick-beam mock-Tudor ceilings. Each room is different. The style is a novel mix of old Europe and The Love Boat, especially in the suites: they may be named 'Merlin' or 'Louis XIV' but they'll have green carpeting and a white bar and lounge area. Corridors have torch-like lamps, plants and knights' armour peppered about, while rustic wide-board wood floors give the lobby an old European feel (in a Disney kind of way). The best part is probably the rooftop pool, which, though small, has great views and breezes. Sunbathing amidst the plants and crenellated ramparts far above Hyderabad is pleasantly disorienting.

Amrutha isn't far from the exquisite Birla Mandir temple. Visit the gods in residence and check out the small but fascinating temple library. Then check out the views from this hilltop temple at sunset. Afterwards, hit Kamat Hotel, or Sukha Sagara for a hearty veg meal.
