Be prepared to be seriously spoilt at this excellent backpackers opposite the beach at Denham. Not only does every room at the hostel have its own ensuite, kitchen and living area with TV/DVD, but owners John and Kirsty take travellers sailing, fishing and on tours.More like an intimate laid-back motel than the usual big hostel with dorms, the well-equipped 3-/4-/5-bed rooms come with a kitchen that have a big fridge, stove, microwave, kettle and toaster. The rooms surround a large swimming pool with sun beds, birdcage, shaded pool table and a communal barbecue and kitchen (if you prefer not to cook in your room). John and Kirsty host regular film nights, bush barbecues - Saturday is bush tucker night - and John has been known to take travellers to the hot tubs for a soak, to the bowling club, on shark-spotting safaris and even to the pistol club for shooting lessons! There's an internet cafe, bike and kayak hire, and a daily shuttle bus (free to guests) to Monkey Mia. If that isn't enough, if you stay a week, the 7th night is free.

A visit to the Shark Bay World Heritage Discovery Centre, a short stroll up the road, is a must. This is a slick, cutting-edge museum and it's one of Western Australia's best. The engaging exhibitions on the area's natural environment, its indigenous people, the many explorers who've passed through and their complex relationships, will really make your experience here all the richer.
