The closest most of us will ever get to a bank job - as opposed to a job in the bank - is a night in this recent arrival to the top table of Dublin hotels, a luxury sleep that began life as a branch of the Allied Irish Bank. The air-con rooms, many of which overlook a beautiful atrium, are decorated in elegant mahogany and soft colours, reminiscent of the USA's finest hotels.

This magnificent property was a while in the making: the old building was almost entirely gutted and rebuilt, but key features of the bank were thoughtfully kept in place, not least the supremely elegant former banking hall, complete with gold leaf plasterwork on the ceiling and lit by a chandelier made of 10,000 pieces of glass. The other bit of bank left over is the money vaults, now converted into the basement Mint Bar. As for the bedrooms, they bear no relation to the old building, but are the height of sophisticated, American-style luxury - the key feature being that you get to sleep on the ten layers of the Westin's own trademark Heavenly Bed, which is damn comfortable indeed. Take afternoon tea in the palm-treed, five-storey atrium lounge, one of the nicest spots to meet and greet in town.
