At Mile 27.9 take a sharp turn up a hill to reach the FE Gold Camp, a national historic site with a charmingly rustic bar and restaurant. There are also hostel-style accommodations, with quaint shared bathrooms. The camp was built in 1925 for the dredging that went on from 1927 to 1957 and removed an estimated around 70 million in gold (at yesterday's prices).
