The muscular, no-holds-barred style of American corporate inn-keeping is in full force at this huge hotel that has sought to raise the hospitality bar. Its OTT look - lots of marble, chandeliers and floral arrangements - has its critics, who think it garish - but there's no denying the sheer quality of the place. For many, this is the best hotel in town.

We're suckers for a slightly more demure display of luxury, but you can't but be impressed by the sheer opulence of the place. The 1st- to 3rd-floor standard rooms - which are themselves graded in three categories from moderate to deluxe - are huge by Dublin standards, beautifully appointed in a neoclassical look and feature marble bathrooms with deep soaking tubs, separate showers and a fancy range of top toiletries. The premium rooms feature more of the same only on a much larger scale while the outlandishly posh suites are the last word in classical luxury. As is the case with all top hotels these days, there's a terrific spa on the premises and a 14m (13ft) pool designed to look like it belongs in a Roman villa. Downstairs is the supercool Ice Bar, the favourite haunt of Dublin's glitterati, who share success stories over well-made drinks. Breakfast is extra.
