The hotel-packed Lapad district is over 4km (2.5mi) from Dubrovnik's Old Town. But if the location doesn't put you off, the Palace is Dubrovnik's top business choice for a super-classy blend of high comfort, great facilities and stylish low-voltage modernism.

Road-level entry sweeps you into a vast expanse of modernist chic with whole-storey windows extending through the piano bar. Abstract fabric installations and a splendid contemporary fireplace add to the effect. Even the muzak sounds hip. The hotel's nine floors are stepped up in layers, etched into a rocky headland. There's no beach but every one of the 308 rooms faces the sea and has a private balcony, ideal for watching the sun setting photogenically into a pair of rocky islets. Decor-wise, colours are fresh and rooms airy with the standards typical of international business hotels. That's perfectly acceptable if not quite as impressive as one might have hoped from the five-star rating and super-stylish public areas. There are four swimming pools. From the indoor one, big windows allow a wonderful panorama across the bay to the mountainous Dalmatian coastline.
