The luxurious Imperial was built in 1895 and is superbly situated within a whistle of the Pile Gate. Its glorious main building was damaged in the 1991-2 war but has long since been immaculately restored to a glowing five-star palace where lift doors slide open between Doric columns. The obliging staff at the Imperial seem noticeably brighter and friendlier than at many of Dubrovnik's other top hotels. Guests love the generous king-sized beds and unlimited tea- and coffee-making facilities. The delightful indoor pool is covered by a glass dome and feels like a latter-day Roman spa. When decoding the price structure note that 'plus' denotes a room incurring an extra charge for its special view. However certain standard-priced 'guestrooms' also offer extremely good views of the Old Town, especially even-numbered rooms on the 2nd and 3rd floors. 'Executive rooms' have private terraces: the best choices for views are Nos 348 and 427. There's also an annexe. Rooms here have the same decor and some are bigger, but several face blandly onto blank walls.

Down a golden whorl of stairs and columns is the Porat Restaurant where your complimentary breakfast is served. Across the road, Sesame is an appealing cafe-restaurant. Dubrovnik's most celebrated restaurant, Nautika, overlooks a pretty turquoise cove from high above.
