The grand Scottish Baronial pile that overlooks the North Bridge - opened in 1904 and hailed as 'the most magnificent newspaper building in the world' - is now home to one of Edinburgh's finest luxury hotels.

The labyrinthine former offices of the Scotsman newspaper house 56 bedrooms and 13 suites, sporting oak-panelled walls, specially commissioned tweed fabrics, coffee tables inlaid with Monopoly boards, and various remnants of the building's previous incarnation - the lobby, brasserie and grand staircase are lined with acres of veined marble. Standard rooms on the northern side enjoy superb views over New Town and Calton Hill. Instead of a minibar there's a wine-rack stocked with full bottles at normal bar prices. The Penthouse Suite has its own private library, a sauna, and a rooftop terrace complete with barbecue. The lower levels, where the presses once clattered out the day's headlines, are now occupied by a state-of-the-art fitness club and spa with slate floors and black ceramic tiles, and a stunning, 16m (50ft) stainless steel swimming pool. There's even a 50-seat private cinema.
