Works by contemporary artists brighten up the one- and two-bedroom apartments that make up the Knight Residence, a modern complex close to the castle and the Lothian Rd financial district. Each has a fully-equipped kitchen (including washing machine and dryer) and a comfortable lounge with cable TV, video and stereo (plus an extension speaker in the bathroom).

You can even order specific CDs and videos to be waiting in your apartment when you arrive. It's not exactly the place for a romantic getaway, but the apartments enjoy a good central location only a few minutes' walk from the Grassmarket (and less than 10 minutes' walk from Edinburgh Castle), and the services - secretarial, fax, email, broadband Internet and PC rental - make it a good bet for business people. Be aware that the one-bedroom apartments overlooking the street can be noisy late on Friday and Saturday nights; the two-bedroom apartments at the back of the building are much quieter.
