Lonely Planet review

With floor-to-ceiling windows in all bedrooms, stunning artwork and a large roof garden, Edinburgh's most unusual luxury hotel is a palace of cutting-edge design perched atop the Omni Centre at the foot of Calton Hill.

Entered through the preserved neo-Gothic facade of the mid-19th-century Lady Glenorchy church, the granite- and marble-clad lobby sports a bold spiral staircase leading to the hotel's own art gallery. All the bedrooms are on the two topmost floors and all have balconies or terraces - choose between those with views over the city, or those opening onto the secluded rooftop garden - and are fitted with Egyptian cotton sheets, leather sofas, and luxurious glass and marble bathrooms with heated stone floors. Choose the Glenturret suite if you fancy playing at James Bond - the remote-control curtains part to reveal a corner balcony with a stunning view of the city, and the bath is big enough for two. There's no restaurant, but you can order a full meal from 24-hour room service, or visit one of the dozens of restaurants within a few minutes' walk.
