Pampering is perhaps too weak a word for the service you'll enjoy at this small but beautifully turned-out Georgian hotel, where the gorgeous period decor - including striped Regency wallpaper and roll-top baths - is complemented by high-tech features such as email-TV and Internet access in all rooms.

Each of the 18 rooms is fitted out with plush fabrics, crisp bed linen, comfy armchairs and antique Bakelite telephones. Bathrooms have Penhaligon's toiletries and 'rain bath' shower heads - some also have antique slipper baths. On arrival, each guest is assigned a personal 'butler' who will do everything from unpacking your bags and polishing your shoes to 'organising your social itinerary' and serving dinner in your room (or even breakfast in bed). There are three opulent 'terrace suites' in the basement, which have their own front doors onto the street, and open onto a private, terraced garden at the back. Most luxurious of the lot is the red and gold Marchmont Suite, complete with canopied bed, gas fire and double Jacuzzi.
