The Bonham is one of the few Edinburgh hotels that manages a successful fusion of traditional Victorian interiors with bold modern colours and contemporary design - check out the crimson spiral sofa in the lobby. Though set in a quiet, West End backstreet, it's only a short walk away from Princes St.

The 48 bedrooms are spread over four floors, with works by Scottish artists adorning the walls. The standard rooms are all decorated differently in shades of rose, sage, chocolate and cream and exude an atmosphere of thick-carpeted opulence. The beds are high, wide and deep and encased in cool, crisp linen; the bathrooms are small but luxurious. There are seven 'superior' rooms - the one to go for is room No 1, which has a huge, oak-panelled bathroom with a Victorian copper bath lying resplendent and gleaming in front of a period fireplace (but no fire, unfortunately). The rooms at the front of the building overlook peaceful gardens, those at the back have views over Dean Village and the Water of Leith.
