Channings is a charming, Edwardian-style hotel with the feel of an expensive private club - the reception and lounge areas sport polished wood panelling, leather armchairs, huge, comfy sofas, fine artworks, vases of fresh flowers and open fires.

The 46 bedrooms are tailored in rich fabrics such as silk, velvet and suede, with very comfortable mattresses, fluffy towels and bathrobes, and internet access via the TV (with a wireless keyboard). Depending on your point of view, the top-floor bedrooms are either smallish or cosy; either way, the views are great. The rooms on the 1st floor are more spacious. However, if it's a special occasion, lash out on a superior room - ask for the one with the beautiful four-poster bed, which has a black and white-tiled bathroom with a Victorian roll-top bath big enough for two. Or go for a suite with double Jacuzzi. The setting is peaceful - rooms at the front have views to the Forth and the spires of Fettes College (where former Prime Minister Tony Blair went to school), and those at the back overlook a private garden.
