If the sleek blonde wood, brown leather and brushed steel of modern boutique hotels leave you cold, then this is the place for you. A 17th-century mansion set in 9ha of parkland (complete with resident peacocks and Highland cattle), Prestonfield House has undergone a two-million-dollar makeover at the hands of James Thomson to become the 'ultimate retort to minimalism'.

From the floodlit facade glowing like a ruby in the night, to the opulent interior draped in damask, packed with antiques and boldly decorated in red, black and gold, the Prestonfield reeks of decadence, indulgence and extravagance. The flicker of Diptyque scented candlelight plays over sensuous fabrics and surfaces - damask, brocade, marble, gilded leather - and illuminates a feast of over-the-top decor that includes original tapestries, 17th-century embossed leather panels, 500.00-a-roll hand-painted wallpaper, and pert-buttocked putti twanging arrows from 200-year-old moulded plaster ceilings. Despite their antique splendour, the hotel's 22 rooms and two suites are supplied with all the mod cons, including wi-fi internet access, Bose sound systems, DVD players, and 30-inch flat-screen TVs cunningly concealed in Gothic cabinets. And there's a complementary bottle of Pol Roger champagne included in the price.
