A grand garden villa built in 1874 for a wealthy Victorian merchant, the Kildonan Lodge is an elegant small hotel with a country-house atmosphere, in a residential suburb 3.5km (2.2mi) south of the city centre. The feeling of being a guest at a country gentleman's mansion is enhanced by the stag's head that presides over the lobby, and the impressive Victorian lounge where you can sit in front of an open fire whilst sipping a whisky from the honesty bar. Most of the 12 bedrooms are spacious and high-ceilinged, although the top-floor rooms are smaller. Fork out a bit of extra cash for one of the four-poster rooms - No 8 is the biggest, complete with marble fireplace, a couple of armchairs in the huge bay window, and a Jacuzzi in the bathroom. Some of the bedrooms are on the ground floor, handy for those who can't cope with stairs.
