The plain exterior of this rambling youth hostel belies its million-dollar location 20m from the beach, with beaut bay views and a pretty, shaded garden. A short bike ride (you borrow bikes for free, rather than hire them), or waterfront walk, takes you along the Esplanade into town.

Good-sized communal areas extend along the narrow length of this lodge, where pot-bellied stoves give welcome heat in the winter. At any time of the year the views to the garden on one side and ocean on the other are made for relaxing. The shared kitchen is big and well-equipped, and even when it's busy you're unlikely to feel crowded here, although you might have to wait your turn at the ping pong or pool table.
