This 22-room ryokan doesn't look like much from the outside, but inside it's quite professional, with hospitable, English-speaking staff, coin laundry, Internet access, a spanking-new communal bath for women and a steam room in the men's communal bath, all available 24 hours per day.

Calling itself 'business washitsu' (Japanese rooms), Meiryu has long been a travellers' favourite for its well-kept facilities and friendly welcome. Room 210 is an extra-large room meant for family stays. Home-style Japanese meals are available. Plus, although Meiryu has Japanese-style rooms, you don't have to take your shoes off in public areas. Please do take them off on tatami, though (as always).
