The Hilton is one of Nagoya's top lodgings. Its soaring lobby with piano player and manicured shrubbery makes a suitably grand entry, and rooms mix contemporary Western-style decor with Japanese touches such as sliding shoji screens and blackout panels on the windows. The Hilton's 438 spacious rooms are meant for business travellers, with English-language TV, in-room safes, rather flashy yukata (cotton bathrobes), nonsmoking floors and decor that's cheerful without being cutesy. Executive floors (23 to 26) feature lounges that serve complimentary snacks, including pastel-coloured marshmallows on our visit. There's a well-equipped fitness centre with a 15m (50ft) swimming pool, sauna, jacuzzi and massage services, plus a tennis court (a luxury in this space-starved nation); the entry fee includes your gym clothes and a swim cap (required for both men and women). The Hilton's seven bars and restaurants include French, Japanese and Chinese, and the Windows on the World cocktail lounge on the top (28th) storey has great views across the entire region and jazz and pop performances.
