Yes, it's in a church. No, no one is going to hand you a Bible or encourage you to accept Jesus. Memphis's only hostel is the kind of clean, welcoming, sunlit space all hostels should be.

Begun by members of the ultra-liberal First Congregational Church (one of the only churches in town to perform gay weddings), Pilgrim House occupies the third floor of a building behind the sanctuary. High points include hardwood floors, a pleasant open kitchen, a sitting area full of books and Memphis info, and free wi-fi and communal computers. There are co-ed and single sex dorms as well as four single rooms. While you're certain to meet plenty of friendly young travelers, this is not a party hostel - there's no alcohol allowed, and quiet hours are rigorously enforced by a live-in staff of twenty-something 'resident advisors'. All guests are given a brief daily chore like taking out trash or putting away dishes. Rental bikes, courtesy of the radical bike co-op downstairs, are perfect for exploring the trendy Cooper-Young neighborhood.
