Originally built for a prince from the Carrega Bertolini family in the late 19th century, this grand hotel delivers up old-world ambience and solid comforts in the heart of the city. However, its most extraordinary feature is its rambling rooftop terrace, which affords some the city's most spectacular views.

The prince had his architects build a palazzo in classically Tuscan style, with beamed ceilings, wood floors and the local blue-grey stone favoured by Michelangelo and Brunelleschi. All rooms are decorated with traditional furnishings, though some are richly fitted out with gilt and brocade while others are more rustic-looking (though still plush). The hotel is one of the largest in Florence, with nearly 200 rooms, so it doesn't have the cosiness of some of the smaller, boutique sleeps. But what it lacks in intimacy it makes up for with the panoramic views from its rooftop terrace, which has a particularly intriguing take on the Duomo; you can see the dome, the facade and the nave as well as Giotto's campanile in one, majestic sweep. Even if you decide to stay elsewhere, come for a meal or a drink here.
