This simple but tasteful guesthouse serves up a hodgepodge of rooms and prices, but if you're willing to forgo your own bath for the decent communal ones, you'll get a pleasant sleep at bare-bones prices - all a short walk from Santa Croce.

Run by a thoughtful father-and-daughter team, the hotel is simply but attractively furnished (rare at these prices). Rooms vary in size but are mostly airy, bright and quite large, an impression that in many rooms is magnified by high ceilings and walls kept a brisk white. The polished composite-stone floors, tawny coloured with hints of pink, also contribute to the pleasant sense of spaciousness. By contrast, a few rooms retain 18th-century frescoes, parquet floors, panelling, and gilding. Some people, perhaps with romance on their minds, insist on Room 13, which is lined with centuries-old mirrors. Some of the mattresses could use updating, but the new management will probably have gotten to them by the time you get here.
